The Devil slips into the violin-bow – folk music gala show, in cooperation with the Hungarian Heritage House
During the late Baroque era in the territories of the Hungarian Kingdom the string ensembles of art music of the age were implemented into folk music, leading to the appearance of stringed formations in villages, which integrated into our traditional music culture. The orchestras, which were based on the model of the orchestration of the Four Seasons or the Brandenburg Concertos, couldn’t be organized into folk music elsewhere in the world, not even in the territories of the “Great Powers” of Baroque music (Germany, Italy, France, England). The bands consisting of the violin –viola – contrabass – wind instruments – cimbalom, as well as their versions without wind instruments or cimbalom, which only characterize the folk music of the peoples of the Carpathian Basin to this day (and the territories of two smaller neighboring regions, the Moravians in eastern Bohemia and Gorals in Southern Poland). This musical collaboration, which demands high qualification, still remains in Hungarian speaking territories to this day and Hungarian folk music is characterized by the traditional string ensembles in the eyes of the world. Last year UNESCO incorporated this traditional element into the international list of representative elements of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. This acknowledgement is a great credit not just for Hungary, but also for those musicians who are keeping alive the values of Hungarian folk music, played on string instruments. During the gala event we can take an exciting round trip in which, following the official announcement of the national recognition we can experience how the rural, traditionalist string bands, professional dancehouse musicians, or rather the most talented members of Hungarian folk string childbands play Hungarian folk music.
